IIS - Cannot get online, but have working broadband?

I had a problem with a virus a week ago and I managed to delete it.
Since then I have got back broadband connection and can send/receive
messages on outlook and also my instant messenger works. However, I
cannot browse the 'net (or update virus checker/antispyware or get
windows updates).

If I have got a connection to my googlemail account to download the
emails to outlook surely the same connection must to good to connect
to the 'net? I have run virus checkers and spyware (all updated from
another pc) and all come back clean.

I even unistalled sp3 and then reinstalled it in case software had
become corrupted. Same with IExplorer8

A friend suggested I should uninstall the antivirus and antispyware as
they could be disablling the connection from within the registry. Is
this likely? Any other ideas?

Would appreciate any help

Peter

This may sound extreme, but I would backup your data and reinstall your
OS. You can never be 100% sure that you have got rid of everything, or
undone everything that the virus did.

A few suggestions:

1. Check that IE is not working off-line. I think this is unlikley, but worth
a check. On the File menu check that "Work offline" does not have a tick
next to it. If you cannot see the File menu then press the left Alt key and
it should appear.

2. Check that your firewall is not blocking IE. I had a friend who could not
browse the internet but everything else worked - eventually tracked it down
to the firewall. It looked like someone had added a rule to block IE. Worth
a check.

3. In IE disable ALL browser helpers. Tools > Internet Options > Programs >
Manage add-ons. Disable everything that is listed. If this solves the
problem then try enabling them one at a time until you can find the
offending one and either leave that disabled or uninstall it.

4. If the above do not help then try downloading firefox and see if you can
get online with that.

When you do find it please post back.
